19 Apr Tissink Returns to Defend his Ironman South Africa Title
This Sunday is the Ironman South Africa in Nelson Mandela Bay (Port Elizabeth) which is the 2nd oldest city of the Eastern Cape. The swim is a 2 loop start at Hobie Beach, a 3 loop bike and then a 3 loop run, which is great for the cheering crowds.
The men to look out for will be last years top three competitors: South Africans Raynard Tissink and James Cunnama (also a Team TBB member), and Germany’s Andi Boecherer. Switzerland’s Mike Aigroz should be in the mix after placing sixth at the Ironman World Championships.
Without defending champion Chrissie Wellington, last year’s third place finisher and Team TBB member, Diana Riesler (GER) will be back to claim an even higher podium spot. Former triple Ironman South Africa champion and Six time World Champion, Natascha Badmann (SUI) will be back and is sure to be hungry (and smiling) for a podium spot–watch for her on the bike. Other women to watch are Spain’s Virginia Berasategui and South Africa’s Claire Horner, who could move up the ranks. Former South African Jacqui Gordon (USA), who now lives in New Jersey, will be looking for a strong finish in her first full Ironman since a bike injury that put her out of competition last year.
