13 Nov Redemption in Florida
I was really happy to see that Yvonne Van Vlerken, the flying Dutchwoman, finally saw all her hard work culminate into a win at Ironman Florida last weekend. Mirinda Carfrae had said earlier in the week that she wasn’t feeling quite up to form, but by finishing second, she is the first woman to punch her card to Kona next year. Having been a winner in the past 5 years, she merely has to complete an Ironman to qualify. Ashley Clifford edged out Meredith Kessler in the final stages of the run to take a valiant third, a wonderful finish to her first year as a pro.
Andrew Starykowicz got off the bike with a monster 19 minute lead and held on for the win, a satisfying end to a year that started off with a bike accident with a volunteer at Abu Dhabi that landed him in prison for hit and run. JanRaphael took second and Scott DeFilippis (Team TBB) took 3rd.
